EXTENSION OF THE SANCTIONS IMPOSED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION AGAINST NICARAGUA

  1. On 14 October 2019, the Council of the European Union adopted Council Regulation (EU) 2019/1716 and Council Decision (CFSP) 2019/1720 concerning restrictive measures in view of the situation in Nicaragua following concerns about the continued deterioration of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua.

By this Decision and Regulation, the Council imposed restrictive measures including the freezing of funds and economic resources of certain natural or legal persons, entities and bodies responsible for serious violations of human rights or repression of civil society and democratic opposition in Nicaragua, of those who undermine democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua, and of persons associated with them.
  1. On 13 October 2022, Council Regulation (EU) 2022/1934 of 13 October 2022 providing for an extension of the restrictive measures contained in Council Decision (CFSP) 2019/1720 until 15 October 2023 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
  1. Furthermore, a notice has been published for the attention of the persons, entities and bodies subject to the restrictive measures provided for in Council Decision (CFSP) 2019/1720 and Council Regulation (EU) 2019/1716, bringing to the attention of the persons, entities and bodies listed in the Annex to the above-mentioned Decision that the Council of the EU, having reviewed the list of designated persons, entities and bodies, has decided that the persons, entities and bodies listed in the above-mentioned Annexes should remain on the list of persons, entities and bodies.
  1. The Council hereby gives notice that the persons, entities and bodies concerned may submit a request to the Council to reconsider the decision to include them on the above-mentioned lists, to be sent by 1 June 2023.
  1. Finally, the Council considers that the explanatory memorandum should be updated as regards two natural persons[1] and empowers the Commission to amend Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1716, which contains the web pages for information on the competent authorities of the Member States and the address for notifications to the Commission.[2].
