We are pleased to share an article published by the Antitrust Alliance (ATA) on a recent ruling by the Appeals Board of the Dutch Advertising Code Committee, which found that Booking.com misleads consumers by displaying hotel star ratings on its platform that have been assigned by the hotels themselves, without sufficiently explaining their origin. 📃 ⚖️
The ruling highlights that the average consumer may understand these stars to represent an objective classification awarded by an independent body in accordance with established criteria, whereas in certain cases they have been assigned by the hotels themselves. This lack of transparency may influence consumers’ booking decisions and constitute misleading advertising. Booking.com must therefore provide clear and readily accessible information about the origin of these ratings across its desktop, tablet and mobile platforms.
