This action was in response to the disqualification of Maria Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reinstatement of the sanctions was justified by the failure of the government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro to open up the democratic process, in violation of the commitments made in October with the majority opposition, gathered in the Unity Platform, in the agreements signed in Barbados.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a direct consequence, <em>General License 44<\/em>, which allowed most US oil companies to operate in Venezuela and the state energy company, Petr\u00f3leos de Venezuela, to sell its oil in the United States and use the financial system to pay creditors and collect debts, expired.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In place of <em>General License 44<\/em>, the US government announced the issuance of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/lupicinio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240417_Venezuela-Sanctions-Regulations_GL44A.pdf\">General License 44A<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>.
